Clary Mastenbroek: Visions and the Female Body

‘A magic realist’ is what Clary Mastenbroek (1947) likes to call herself. And so she is. Although her paintings seem realistic at first glance, they certainly aren’t an ordinary depiction of the real world. The theme of the female nude can be found consistently through her oeuvre, often complemented by symbolical elements, such as shells, horses, birds, fish or plants. Mastenbroek uses dreamy colours, especially hues of green of blue. Although born and raised in the Netherlands, the artist has been living and working in House Fairbrook in Ireland for years.
