Theo L’Herminez and his Magic Realism

Silent and seemingly without emotion the portrayed people in the paintings of Theo L’Herminex (1921 – 1997) observe the viewer. The figures are stylized and without any superfluous detailing. His characteristic style took time to develop: Starting his career as designer of commercials, the artist later decided to follow an art education in order to become a full time painter. L’Herminez graduated at de Academie van Beeldende en Bouwende Kunsten in Tilburg. His style however, is quite self-thought, and ranges from impressionist in the early periods to realist and finally something much akin to the magic realism of Pyke Kouch and Carel Willink.
